人生の祝福
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey…
I asked for health, that I might do greater things
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things…
I asked for riches, that I might be happy
I was given poverty, that I might be wise…
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God…
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things…
I got nothing that I asked for — but everything I had hoped for
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men, most richly blessed!
大事をなそうとして 力を与えてほしいと神に求めたのに
慎み深く従順であるようにと 弱さを授かった。
より偉大なことができるように 健康を求めたのに
より良きことができるようにと 病弱を与えられた。
幸せになろうとして 富を求めたのに 賢明であるようにと 貧困を授かった。
世の人々の賞賛を得ようとして 権力を求めたのに
神の前にひざまずくようにと 弱さを授かった。
人生を享楽しようと あらゆるものを求めたのに
あらゆることを喜べるようにと 命を授かった。
求めたものは一つとして与えられなかったが 願いは全て聞きとげられた。
神の意にそわぬ者であるにもかかわらず 心の中の言いあらわせない祈りはすべてかなえられた。 私はあらゆる人生の中でもっとも祝福されたのだ。
この詩が「病者の祈り」としてニューヨーク大学リハビリテーション医学研究所の壁に書き残されているとのことです。
